Dental health service in Northern Ireland

The Health Service provides the dental treatment necessary for the health of your mouth and teeth. It is available to everyone, even if you are not registered with the Health Service and, depending on your circumstances, you may have to pay for dental treatment.

The nidirect website provides information on the types of dentists and treatments available in Northern Ireland.  Please be aware that it is becoming increasingly difficult to register with an NHS dentist in Northern Ireland – many dental practices operate waiting lists and some no longer accept NHS patients and only carry out private practice.

Cross-border issues

  • Many people from the Republic of Ireland choose to  avail of private dental services in Northern Ireland as  costs can vary greatly between the two jurisdictions. It is recommended that you contact the dental practices directly and request a written quotation prior to commencing treatment.
  • Frontier workers – If you live in the South and work in the North you are eligible for NHS healthcare, including dental care in NI. Please see Border People / Healthcare for Frontier Workers
