Brexit: Free Movement
Currently free movement across the border is facilitated by both the Common Travel Area (CTA) and EU membership.
After Brexit the CTA will continue to protect some rights for Irish and British citizens.
In May 2019 the Irish and UK Governments signed a joint Memorandum of Understanding that seeks to strengthen the rights associated with the CTA.
- Right to enter the other jurisdiction without a visa
- Right to Employment
- Right to Social security
- Right to Education
- Right to Healthcare
- Voting rights
The Irish Government’s Brexit & You webpage contains an FAQ that provides practical guidance for Irish and British citizens.
