A New Era In Free All-Island Travel Begins

October 2, 2014

From 2 April 2007 senior citizens from both sides of the border can travel all over the island for free!

The previous Cross-Border Travel Service allows users to travel from a point in one jurisdiction to a point in the other jurisdiction. The new scheme allows seniors (those aged 66 and over) resident in ‘Ireland to travel free of charge on all bus and rail services in Northern Ireland. Likewise, seniors (over 65) in Northern Ireland can travel free on bus, rail, air and ferry services participating in the Free Travel scheme in Ireland

Under the updated scheme, free travel in Ireland will be available to pensioners from Northern Ireland using their current  Senior Smartpass as a flash-pass.  Persons from Ireland wishing to avail of the free travel concession will require a similar electronic Senior Smartpass and this can be obtained through the Department of Social and Family Affairs.
