On 23 June 2016, the United Kingdom (UK) voted to leave the European Union (EU). The exact implications of the UK’s decision to exit will be decided during negotiations once the UK triggers Article 50 of the Treaty of Lisbon. There is likely to be a significant impact on the rights of UK citizens in relation to Europe. Many UK citizens who are entitled have applied for Irish citizenship. There are over 400,000 Irish-born people resident in Britain.
